 | | Hi all!
I wanted to start a thread about the "Hardcoreness percentage" of the 360 vs PS3. I didn't include the Wii since we all know there are many more "casual gamers" on the Wii than "Hardcore Gamers".
To me, the 360 is the "Hardcore King". I think its mainly due to the 360's better graphics chip and awesome 3rd party support such as Halo 3 and Gears of War. Those games, only hardcore gamers play.Right now, I'm kind of thinking that only %5 of PS3 gamers are hardcore and a WHOPPING %10 of 360 owners are hardcore.
Please remember to keep this thread UNBIASED! |

AKS
 | | A lot of the most played "hardcore" games are available for both the 360 and PS3. I think Call of Duty 4 is the most played game on either system. The 360 probably has the most hardcore online shoot 'em up fans. I'd imagine the hardcore racing fans are going to be playing GT5 on the PS3. I've played through MGS4 about 10 times since it's been released and have all the weapons and the Big Boss emblem, so I imagine I fit into some sort of hardcore gamer category. The library of hardcore of those consoles are both quite nice.
The 360 has a larger user base of around 5 or 6 million and released a year earlier, so the 360 would have the larger number of hardcore games and more people playing them. Many of the most promising hardcore games are going to be multiplatform, however.
The most hardcore and dedicated console gamers buy all the consoles and pick the best games from each system. |
|
| embargiel | | | Hardcore gamers of what genre though? Hardcore Halo fans would probably play X360, whereas, as AKS said, hardcore racing fans would be playing GT5 on PS3. Or are you talking about hardcore gamers in general? Well, if that's the case, I could not imagine any other platforms having more hardcore gamers than the PC. |

Airzonk Nintenwhore
 | | So you agree with me in saying that the 360 has the most hardcore gamers. Thank you for support.
What percentage of PS3 and 360 gamers are hardcore vs softcore gamers? |
|
Airzonk Nintenwhore
 | | I'm talking about Hardcore gamers' choice of platform. I mean, if we had to divide this by genre, we would have to include the Nintendo Wii since it has games in the same genre. But, most people agree that hardcore gamers do not flock to the Wii. It's just a casual console. That's why I didn't include it as a choice.
So what percentage of gamers on 360 and PS3 are hardcore? |

| It looks like Microsoft is starting to be less hardcore. Xbox 360 Fanboy, citing "a tip from a source close to Microsoft's marketing department," says the price cut to $199 for the Arcade system is meant to position that bundle against the Wii.

Will the PS3 take the "hardcore" lead? |

| So you agree with me in saying that the 360 has the most hardcore gamers.
There are about 6 million more 360s on the market and an extra year's worth of hardcore games, so in terms of raw numbers, the 360 surely has more.
Also, looking at the 360 and PS3 crowds, I don't think "softcore" games are going to go over well with the 360 user base, which is why I questioned the upcoming Wii-esque avatars. It doesn't seem to mesh well with guys meeting in a cartoony room of avatars to chainsaw rape each other in Gears.
"Hardcore" 1. 360 2. PS3 3. Wii
"Softcore" 1. Wii 2. PS3 3. 360
Again, the most dedicated console gamers will buy all three consoles.
I don't think the issue of differences by genre can be avoided.
No truly hardcore racing fan will skip the PS3's GT5. No hardcore adventure fan will pass up Twilight Princess and Okami, both available on the Wii. And of course the ultraviolent types will get their thirst for blood quenched with Gears. |

 | | | Bangbus and 8th street latinas match each other in hardcore. I agree with you on softcore. |

| I own 27 games on my 360. I not a fan of shooters & obviously didn't bought the 360 to play Halo nor Forza.
The reason why I chose the 360 is mainly to few key 3rd party partner so I could enjoy them more early with their art & the system potential.
If I didn't bought a PS3 is due that it deliver bad performance & experience overall. No truly hardcore racing fan will skip the PS3's GT5.
I'm a pro at racing & not really interested to own GT5. There's so much n00b that I may only see drift n00b rooms all over the place.
That's pretty much the reality. |

 | | I thought you gave up on bangbus after you found out it was fake.
I don't think anyone is hardcore unless they've suffered an injury building their own gaming system. |

 | | Easy,
Xbox 360 = Best Hardcore console for the eastern world (but hopefully getting more and more hardcore western games too).
PS3 = Best console for the "followers" or the casual hardcores and the multimedia hardocres. PS2 had that much success that the uninformed still think that the PS brand is the best one available right now.
AKS does have some good points.
But in the end, only games will set these two consoles apart. Price, Bluray, loading times, graphics (it's almost identical) can be a factor, but games are the major factor and right now, X360 has a better gaming catalogue. |

 | | | I vote 360 for hardcore. My PS3 is basically a blu-ray player for me. I play games on occassion on it. Then again, to me, any game other than Chromehounds is nothing more than a passing fad. (2 years and 2200 hours on it now!) |

 | | At the moment I use my PS3 more because I have been playing Burnout a lot to get new cars and to play Chi, Monsly and AKS online.
Really depends what games I have at the time as to which one I play more often. If its an online game I pick it up on PS3 more often than not because its free and I dont have the overpriced 360 wireless adapter.
Obviously game exclusives I pick up on the relevant console. |

| I'm pretty hardcore. I game on my PC.
However, that is not a choice, so I'm going to say that PS3 is more hardcore just because the cost of entry is much much higher than the 360. As far as software though, the 360's lineup more closely resembles the PC's software, making it more hardcore by default. So I'm going to declare it a tie. |

| you could be the most loyal gamer with every intention of been a hardcore gamer, but if you aint got the cash nor the personal time then its impossible!
Certainly its a lot easier to be a hardcore gamer if your a kid (as you have the personal time and your folks will splash out on you rather than themselves, one of many reason not to have kids!) than a adult [who has bills to pay, social life and other personal activities ;)] and most definately if your an adult with kids you will never get on the system!
Todays gaming has more casual gamers to that of hardcore. I feel that 8/16bit era was really when you could say 80+% of people who gamed were dedicated gamers! Since the 32bit era, especially from the release of the PS1, loads of people jumped on the gaming band wagon, in particular the older genertaion to me (e.g. my half sister who's now aged 42 (14 years difference) became a casual gamer when ps1 was released and now games on the Wii and xb360).
PS3 and XB360 will be approx 40-45% hardcore if your lucky! |

| To be honest, in order for me to consider someone a hardcore gamer he has to do PC gaming as a requirement, that's not to say consoles don't count, as they add to the hardcoredness. But if you don't do PC gaming you're immediately, i dunno, middlecore, even if all you do is play fps on your 360 and jrpgs on your ps3.
It's like wondering who's hardcore, the guy who buys a Honda Civic, the one who buys a Corvette or the one who builds and maintains his own Ferrari in his garage. It might not be for everyone, but that's why they're the ones who really are hardcore.
However, since it's out of the question here, i'll say the Xbox is more hardcore than the PS3, since the PS3 basically has MGS4 and Uncharted as the only "hardcore" exclusives worth mentioning, and Xbox games also have people dedicating so much more time to them than anything in the PS3 (Halo 3, GoW probably have more online players than all the PS3 titles combined) while Sony seems kinnda giving up on the hardcore front and have started pimping the PS3 as more of a Media Center. |

| Those who bought a PS3 at launch for $600 (like me) had to be pretty hardcore... to shell out that much money for a "videogame" console.
I own both Xbox 360 and PS3... On 360, I've owned almost 40 games, but Gears of War is the only game I can play constantly. I can't even play Halo 3, Mass Effect or Bioshock for 15 minutes, without wanting to move on to something else. |
|
YoYo monsly's Nemesis | | Exchange 'hardcore' for 'stooopid'.
You almost redeem yourself in the next paragraph but then you blow it by saying Halo, ME and Bioshock don't hold your interest. You're probably just not playing those games properly or with the right buddies.
What's your gamertag? Let me kick your ass online. |

| I think I am a hardcore gamer. I still raid part time with my level 80 mage in wow and plan on getting it to 85. Besides wow I don't play any other PC game at the current time.
As far as consoles go I got a launch Xbox 360 and I have been happy with it. I got the PS3 60Gb version when it dropped by 100 because I wanted a BluRay player and I knew great games would be in its future.
I also have a Wii but I got it to mostly play with my ex who loved it. Still I have to say that Mario Galaxy was worth buying the system.
I own more games for the 360 and when multi console games come out I look to see who has the better version. So far its been the 360 that has the best multi platform games. To me it makes sense giving most multi platform games come out for the PC and well MS makes direct X and the 360 thus they are really close to program for at the low level.
I only buy exclusives for the PS3 and then I pick what I like to play. I only own 7 titles but they are great in MS4, LBP, Resistance 1 & 2, Uncharted, Killzone 2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma I love Ninja Gaiden and I had to have this haha.
I have over 40 games the 360.
You have to be hard core if you wait in line at mid night to buy games. The games I have waited in line to buy @ mid night indluce Wow The Burning Crusade, Wow Wrath of the Lynch King, Halo 2, Halo 3, Gears of War 2, Resident Evil 2. |

 | | After surveying 1 million* random gamers, these are my findings.
Hardcore Local 1. Xbox 360 2. PS3 3. Wii
Hardcore Online Multiplayer 1. Xbox 360 2. PS3 3. Wii
Casual Local 1. Wii 2. Xbox 360 3. PS3
Casual Online Multiplayer 1. PS3 2. Xbox 360 3. Wii
These stats show that Xbox 360 is more hardcore than PS3. At the same time, PS3 is less casual than Xbox 360.
*Survey sample size was rounded up to the nearest million. |

 | | | There's absolutely nothing "hardcore" about playing games on any console. The only people who can call themselves "hardcore" gamers are the people who play on PC. I don't consider myself a "hardcore" gamer, but I do the majority of my gaming on PC. Whether or not PC is "better" is debatable. I very much enjoy gaming on my PC more than on consoles though. |
|
Suckattack
 | | I game on PC when possible because I know I can cap myself at 60 fps instead of the awfully common 30-minus on the consoles. Not to mention the eye candy.
But I'm not hardcore. I barely have time to go through a level of any game nowadays... |
|
monsly
 | | | Surely that depends on your definition of hardcore. I don't see anything hardcore in only playing PC games or just console games. I suppose the word you're looking for is limited gamer. People who only go for one over the other out of choice are very much limited gamers, I agree. |
|
| Shogoki | | September 16, 2009 [edited: Sep-16-09] | 30 | | To: monsly |
| I think their point is that calling console gamers hardcore is like calling 1/3 of the 10's of millions of Honda drivers "hardcore drivers" because they sit on them a few hours a day as they commute to work, shopping etc., as opposed to the other 2/3 that are soccer moms and only use them a few mins a day to pick their kids from school.
Face it, what most people here and everywhere think constitutes a "hardcore gamer" is just as mainstream as watching tv was a few years ago because it's not cool to admit one's part of a huge and easily manipulated demographic that will flock to whatever prepackaged, mass produced product the industry tells them it's cool this week.
The level or manliness, cuteness or quirkiness of said product is irrelevant, as is the level of "hardcoredness" of it's consumers; they all come from the same production line and are consumed by equally large numbers of people. |
|
| PirateGuy | | I'm not as hardcore as I used to be. However I still spend a lot of time gaming with my PC. So I can say PC is my hardcore gaming platform.
But really, its all a matter of preference and how much you spent your gaming time on a particular platform.
Be it X360, PS3, Wii, PSP, NDS, etc.
I got a PS3 and a Wii, but I consider both to be casual platform. |
