PS2 sales for June??

Why on earth did sales double into that month?

I bought a new PS2+ Broadband Package a while back.
But that couldn't have been as recent as June, perhaps Febuary?

Crazy. I just don't see what could have driven sales during that month?
...could it have been the publicity over PSP??? Perhaps.

The sales doubling is due to the price drop in mid-May. Sony announced that in June. The April sales surge for Xbox was also due to a price drop. Although, some might claim that a "montage" of low-priced Xbox software is responsible.

June must have been a slow month for Aibo sales. Thats the only way to explain the spike in sales for PS2.

Hmm I wonder if this lead that the xbox has now, will play in its favour for the forthcoming XBOX2, they are building a nice userbase to gain new users from, and the progressional growth is showing that people are trying to get in on the best online experience offered in the console world.

I am still very suprised that sony are shifting this many consoles this late in the game. I wonder when people will stop. One question, are the sales of the PS2 shown that of the Original PS2, or the PS2 SMALL?

Xbox's sales lead over Christmas can be explained by 2 things:

1. Halo 2, the most hyped game ever.

2. The market is probably getting close to saturated with PS2s, what with 80 million of them out there worldwide, and what with the graphics looking increasingly dated.

Xbox's sales surge is to be expected. Most new Xbox owners are actually PS2 owner who might be looking for something new after a couple of years of their old console especially as the prices drop.

To put this into perspective for the price of a PS2 launch bundle, you can now buy a PS2 and games, Xbox and games and game cube with a couple of games.

There are ofcourse Xbox owner buying PS2s as well but there are many more PS2 owners buying an xbox that the other way round.

Whoever thinks Nintendo is in decline should look at those November numbers...over 2,100,000 units of hardware in a single month. Of course, the Gamecube numbers will drop after the holidays, but still...f'ing impressive.

Thats still quite a lot of gbas being sold. In fact, now that I think about it, I have been seeing a few of them here and there in the streets, mostly younger kids. Being cheap goes a long ways with parents, I guess. I have a feeling that Nintendo will still sell them as long as they keep making them.

And why not? There is still a market for the Parents who are a leary of handing their grubby clumsy kids something as pretty as a DSL touchscreen or expensive as a PSP. If they keep up with releases and rereleases now and again, why shouldnt Nintendo again thumb its nose to convention and keep the GBA going forever? The lite looks dumb with gba carts in it anyways.

I can only imagine that the DS sales will skyrocket even more after the GBA is phased out in the US. It will probably see a price cut during that period too, since something has to replace the GBA SP as the lower end choice. Should the DS get below the $100 mark, it will cement itself in the US market as the perennial hardware mover in the US much like the GBA proved itself to be.

As for the slouching PSP numbers....I think the PS3 hype is cannabalizing the PSP's momentum. Who knows if Sony wants the PSP to just fade away. They don't seem to mind, considering PSP support from Sony, other than some vague claims from PR reps, has gone cold.

Good afternoon. David Riley here, from The NPD Group. I couldn't help but notice that you have been regularly posting our proprietary retail sales information. This needs to stop.

This posting serves as a notice to immediately cease these activities or NPD will be forced to take legal action against you.

Our lawyers love pursuing sites and media outlets that blatantly disregard common corporate policies (and common sense), so I have no issue with forwarding this to them if you do not comply.

Thank you and have a great day!

GBA and PS2 selling still shows how price sensitive the US can actually be. There are people who want to play games but a lot just cannot afford some fo the price tags. It is good that the other alternatives are still there until the next gen systems come down in price.

Interesting to see PS3 numbers going down that much. I assume it would hover around 200,000 given last month's performance.

Not suprised. Lack of games & price killed the demand.

No suprised for Nintendo DS seeing that I actually bought one this week.

DS = 508,000
PS2 = 280,000
Wii = 259,000
360 = 199,000
PSP = 180,000
GBA = 148,000
PS3 = 130,000
GCN = 22,000

PS3 desperately needs a price cut. And PS2 beat Wii.

It would be interesting to see what the PS1 sales figures were in comparison to PS2 sales 5 months after release. I would suspect the PS2 easily outselling the PS1. This just further illustrates that the price point for this generation of consoles is having a negative impact on sales.

Steve, on the front page chart, could you possibly extend the chart backward to the PS2's launch?

Hello Chairmansteeve,

I am doing research for my thesis on the impact of the PS2 on DVD sales. The table on the first page is extremely useful but unfortunately I need to track the sources down. This is not a problem for the past 2 years, but I'm having a hard time finding the older numbers?
Do you recall where these numbers come from? Are they all NPD numbers like the recent ones?

Thanks a lot for your help !
